You don't write. You don't call.

The customer service at ToryBurch.com is completely slacking! I checked my email today and saw that one of my sandals (the bright pink) is ready to ship (money not charged to my Amex yet), but I got absolutely no follow up on the yellow-green pair. I don't care if you can't fill my order, but at least shoot an automated email stating that my order is cancelled.

I need to keep track of my packages this week!

Lucky, lucky me. Justin told me that a very, very special Louis Vuitton bag was ordered for me. I don't want to reveal too much, but he doesn't remember all the details of what's coming... but it required a charge send to be shipped to Chicago and then shipped to me (as a security precaution against credit card fraud). But I definitely won't see myself coming and going! Limited edition and all that.

I'm going to be stalking the mailroom in our building all week.

I can't resist Tory Burch shoes on sale!

I ordered these Caylan style sandals from the Tory Burch website in two colors, the citron (shown) and a hot, berry pink... (Though it sucks that both colors weren't available at the same time, because then I would have saved on shipping.)
I really couldn't decided between the two colors (can't try them on in real-life) so I decided to just order both and see which color I like better in person. I'm losing out on shipping, but I was able to use the discount code "torygilt" for 20% off.

I should be getting them in five business days, so within a week of my birthday. Happy Birthday to me!

I went for Chinese food, I came back with scarves.

I was craving Chinese food like crazy... but sadly, the only place for Chinese food we've previously tried is Hon's Wok and it was Dateline expose- disgusting. Yeah, that fucking disgusting.

So, I Google mapped the closest Pei Wei. I know, real authentic... but when all you're craving is soy sauce and you're looking to spend under $30 for two people, Pei Wei is fine. While we live within a reasonable driving distance to Ladue, we never head over that way... we live in the city afterall! So after dinner, I wanted to drive around the shopping center to see what else was there...

Danger! Danger! An Old Navy. I don't think I've been to an Old Navy within a year and a half... Old Navy is like a Target or Forever 21 to me, everything is so cheap that I lose track of what I'm spending. I found the most perfect little black tee shirt dress, but even though it was only $19.50... I just couldn't buy it because the quality of the cotton was so bad that the black was fading in spots and the fabric was already pilling.

I like cheap thrills as much as the next girl, but the snob in me won't let me wear such cheap fabric and poor construction. I did find two grey tanks that are great for layering under some organic dyed tees I have that have a tendency to transfer color... And I got two GREAT scarves for only $12.50 each! They are a great steal:

... I can't wait to rock my new hot pink plaid scarf with a plain white v-neck tee and my killer AG hot pink acid washed Stilt skinny jeans (color is desert rose, if you're willing to search for them on Google) and white Tory Burch flats tomorrow. I know it sounds dreadfully obnoxious, but trust me... I'm a stylist and I have an eye for these sorts of things. I also picked up a bright, solid yellow scarf to wear with my numerous grey tee shirts and boyfriend jeans.

As for the dress, I've been searching for mad for the dress it is a knock-off of. I found a James Pearse dress that is close but not close enough... the search shall continue!

I'm not dead!

Just super-busy, guys!

So much work-related/fashion related stuff going on as well as my never-ending travel schedule. I'm a motherfucking rockstar without a band... I probably should just post tour dates, coming to your hometown soon!

I would say that an update is in order... but I'm going out of town Thursday for Chicago (again, for 5 days... six events while I'm there).

Thanks for everyone still following me... I'm thinking of also establishing a common Twitter for my ABTT and Fat Skinny Girl blog fans, it'll be easier to update where ever I am.

No one ever believes the "crazy" ones...

Everyone thought I was joking when I wrote my article "How to shop--- for the Apocalypse"...

...well, well, well. I'll just have you know that today we experienced a hail storm. A hail storm from Saint Louis, MO to Nashville, TN...

... in June.

So give it another read. If we have crazy climatic disasters like the History Channel's Apocalypse Week predicts, I am going to be set. I have triple weight cashmere and a Burberry full-length down parka for sub-artic tempertures. I have been consistantly maintaining my base tan in case of ozone depletion and longer sun exposure. If need be, I can sacrifice one of my handbags and sew it into a leather helmet and sacrifice a pair of stilettos to make a Maori Warrior-like spear.

A girl's gotta be prepared to dress the best for the worst.

Purse Fiends, pay attention!

My fellow purse fiends, I've got great news. You know what you're doing tomorrow?

From 10am-12pm, you're going to be chatting with one of my favorite handbag designers, Monica Botkier (of Botkier) on BagSnob.com! It's a great opportunity to ask any care questions or to give feedback on styles you would like to see available.

And my DC purse fiends, this weekend you're going to totally clean up: Rebecca Minkoff will be having a sample sale! My favorite styles from Rebecca Minkoff are the Morning After satchels and the Nikki shoulder bags.

Here's the information for the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale:

Saturday, June 6th
10am-4pm
Hotel Helix
1430 Rhode Island NW- Washington, DC
(202) 462-9001
*no phone or email orders, you have to shop victoriously in person

There's two things a girl can't have enough of...

One is Diet Coke and the other is black skinny jeans... Okay, so it's also impossible to own too many handbags and pairs of shoes too.

My trusty faded black skinny jeans were no longer faded black, but rather a darker grey. It just means I got my money's worth out of them!

I bought another pair of AG Stilt cut jeans, but in the Quarter wash. They are faded black with shiny gold top stitching and gold hardware. I wear a lot of gold, so for me and my personal style these are a perfect addition to my closet.

Yes, I am aware it is the summer season. I'm a big girl and I can dress like Biker Barbie as much as I want to!

Chicago, my kind of town*

*provided it is not -14 degrees.

+ strawberry cheesecake truffles at Long Grove Confectionary

+ fun new Chanel lipgloss and nail polish, with tons of fun samples

- Ball And Chain now knows how much Chanel nail polish costs... uh oh

+ funny, funny people

+ saw Angels and Demons, it was better than The Da Vinci Code on the basis that you aren't forced to stare at Tom Hanks in a curly mullet for an hour and a half

+ the Chicago History Museum's Chic Chicago exhibit was so interesting, I think Ball And Chain enjoyed it (he doth protest too much)

+ found a great healthy sandwich place in Lincoln Park, next to Zanies... then went to the zoo!

- took two college-educated adults to find our hotel 8 minutes away by the Chicago River

+ upgraded to a GREAT suite: his and hers bathrooms, closets and two bars!

- took us an hour to find the restaurant, due to Ball And Chain looking at the gps wrong... all the
while, I was stumbling around in 5" cheetah print heels

+ caught Rod Blagovich Superstar, one of the funniest pieces to grace the theater stage

+ after-show drinks at Emerald Loop

+ morning of Starbucks, Millenium and Grant Park

+ successfully crashed the Mr. Leather pageant at the Hilton

+ walked the Mag Mile... more like Mag 5 Miles!

+ Memorial Day brunch with s'mores... yummy yummy s'mores

There's Winnies... and there's losers...

A new jewelry designer is on the scene! You know how I love quality pieces that break out of the usual Tiffany & Co., Cartier, David Yurman mold... Winifred Grace's new website just launched, Winifred Grace .

My personal faves are the rhinestone cluster pieces, but she seems to have a coherent, yet diverse collection so there's a little something for everyone. Or anyone with good eyesight, at any rate.

My NYer friends get lucky again, because there's a trunk sale: Winifred Grace will be holding a trunkshow on June 4 & 5 from 11am-7pm at Steven Alan Brooklyn, 349 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217

If you're not already in Brooklyn, it's definitely worth the trip given other great designers and boutiques across the bridge. Not to mention the very, very good yet so, so cheap mango salad at Joya in Cobble Hill!

Chic Chicago

I must say that my boyfriend is a saint. This is a great accomplishment-- given that he is Jewish. But his mother can sleep well at night, knowing that his patience and willingness to put up with my passion for fashion is near godly.

I'm spending Memorial Day in Chicago(For those keeping track of my May travel schedule: Saint Louis, Nashville, Saint Louis, DC, Saint Louis, Chicago...)and I am planning on seeing all of the sights available this coming weekend: Rod Blagojevich Superstar, the Mr. Leatherman convention at the Hilton (talk about great people-watching... I can't wait to see the faces of Midwestern tourists that just happened to book at the Hilton), and the Chicago History Museum's Chic Chicago exhibit.

The exhibit boasts over 500 couture gowns from several decades. Being Chicago, I can look forward to seeing some Halston:

I cannot wait. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is probably not sweating with anticipation for the gown exhibit... Maybe I can make it more enjoyable for him with some Sasha Baron Cohen "Bruno" impersonations.

"I like how your designs are inspired by cardboard."

How to shop-- for necklaces!

One of the strangest questions I've been asked as a stylist is how to pick out a necklace. Picking out a piece of jewelry seems simple enough: Is it pretty and would I wear it? Most people think jewelry is a no-brainer because it seemingly matches everything... Um, what does gold, silver, platinum and sparkly not match?

But it can be pretty panic-inducing if you aren't comfortable with your sense of style nor confident in your personal tastes. Not everyone is a fashion expert or a stylist... that's why some of us are paid to give advice, haha.

So, let's break it down and discuss the different styles of necklaces:

The Casual-Cool Charm Necklace

First, there's the casual-cool charm necklace. What's great about these necklaces (often featuring several pendants, charms and stones on a simple chain) is that they are so easy to throw on, they're distinctive and they pretty much match most casual outfits. The longer varieties are great paired with oversized tee shirts and sweaters, as they visually produce a long and lean line. They look great draped over the plunging neckline of a casual jersey day dress and you can also wear them with a simple v-neck tee shirt, skinny jeans and a ballet flat. One of my favorite ways to accessorize this style of necklace is I throw mine on with a plain tee shirt and then I tie a fringed cotton scarf higher on my neck and collarbone. The necklace dangles between both ends of the scarf and it gives a cool layered look. The necklace shown is by one of my favorite jewelry designers, Nicole Shumann.

Simple Styles

Next we have the more simple styles: clean chains, simple pendants and a classic strand of pearls or beads. These styles can dress up or down quite easily... they are the Little Black Dress of the jewelry world! I think every woman should own a well-designed (yet) simple piece, since they will match everything including other jewelry pieces. Longer chains can be worn single-strand for a casual look or to break up a blousy silhouette, or you can double strand your necklace for a dressier, closer to the collar-bone look. These are your go-to pieces if you want to wear clothing with any extreme detailing (ruffles, beading) or any loud prints. The gold necklace is available at Ylang-Ylang jewelers in Saint Louis, MO and the silver necklace is a super-bargain at Urban Outfitters!

The Statement Bib Necklace

Finally, we have what is so, so, so hot right now in fashion: the statement bib necklace. I'll admit, there's a specific way to wear these without looking like an idiot. These must be paired with either a fuller dress, a simple blouse that is tucked into a great skirt or with a simple shell paired with a well-fitting suit. Do not deviate from this formula or you will look emotionally deranged. You see, the necklace must be paired with a full enough dress in order for a balanced look. If paired with a Herve Leger-type sleek bandage dress, the necklace completely takes over... but when paired with a trapeze dress with a halter neckline, the necklace appears to be part of the outfit. With a blouse, the necklace is designed to look like a part of an elaborate blouse. I love the strong, geometric designs paired with a suit because it holds it's own against the strong tailored lines of a suit while also feminizing the look. It also covers the chest, which is always a good call in a professional work environment (barring stripping). I found the first bib necklace on one of my favorite sites, Net-A-Porter. The second necklace is a steal at Banana Republic!

Some of my favorite retailers for jewelry (for something different than that Tiffany look) are: Barneys, ShopBop, Ylang-Ylang, Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, J.Crew and Cusp.
Bring on the bling, lades!

Let's talk fashion in DC

I'm finally back from my trip (physically AND mentally, the mental part has taken a couple of days...).

I was SO a tourist. I just looked at everything: museums, signage, cherry trees, parks, buildings... and OF COURSE what everyone around me was wearing! What people were wearing on the Metro... at museums... in the cafe... at Starbucks... in Whole Foods... shopping at Georgetown...

For the most part on the Hill, I noticed lots of boxy suits and separates on women. I have a feeling it's because most young professionals don't think they have the time or money to get their suiting tailored (um, a pet peeve of mine if you couldn't tell...). I felt a kind of stifling force, as though no one accessorized or worked within the professional dress code to express themselves. I didn't see very many blouses (just yaaaaaawn, a shell under a blazer) or accents really. Given my Southern roots, I was dying to put a hot pink blouse on someone or throw on a hammered gold cuff or something. Or throw a piece of paper with "barneys.com for shoes, please!" into someone's drab work bag...

That said, Georgetown and Dupont Circle showed me DC's more casual style. No one was rocking the boyfriend jeans, yet... but I noticed lots of pretty, easy jersey knit sundresses worn with gladiator and metallic sandals. I noticed lots of pretty colorful cotton scarves tossed casually around the neck and for going out, a floral print tank with bootcut jeans. At G&T, I noticed everything from denim cut-offs worn with cowboy boots to a pair of black leggings with a sorority tee shirt. Guys primarily were wearing a preppy, all American look... even the guys working at Barney's Co-op!

While DC has the reputation for being a very fashion-shy and conservative city, it definitely lacks the stuffiness that you would think goes with the stereotype. You don't have to wear a twin set and pearls, and you definitely can wear jeans most places. I like that you can wear the same outfit all night, whether you're hopping to G&T or Russia House or Dove and Hawk. Pretty much anything goes!

As far as cool, local labels... I really didn't find any in the boutiques I wondered into. I did find a great Marc by Marc Jacobs wallet that I snatched up on sale at Cusp in Georgetown... it's a very neon yellow! My only souvenir, but it definitely came in handy with me buying Metro cards left and right...

Intermission, stay for the 2nd act

Sorry about the lack of articles and updates lately, guys.

I've been visiting Washington, D.C. and I've been pretty busy hanging out with friends and such. Though, I've been meeting a lot of people and lately, I've been getting a lot of style questions and ideas of articles people would like to read.

I promise when I get back, I'll do some features on D.C. shopping and style, men's fashion, work-appropriate clothing and how to accessorize. The people have spoken, but give me a couple of more days to bum around D.C. before I sit down and really turn out my fashion thoughts.

I promise, the wait will be worth it!

"Can I help you?"

Someone found my blog through the Google search "salesgirl + stockings."

I hope he wasn't disappointed to find no salesgirls in no stockings. But hey, Bubba... let's do a trade. I will send you a picture of my calves in some fishnets I picked up from Anthropologie, if you promise to send a picture of yourself in stockings or something even more devilishly humiliating.

I promise* that I won't post it.

(*Okay, I probably will just forward it via e-mail. Or post it on Facebook. And probably post it on my blog too... The star means it's my legal disclaimer in fine print!)

Boys get everything!

Of course, I find the perfect Drum Major jacket for F/W 09-10... and it's part of D & G's men's line.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't kick Balmain's rhinestoned band jacket out of bed for eating crackers... but the whole "sold out" and $11,000 price tag make the opportunity unlikely.

But damn... the jacket's made of tweed, so there's no doubt that it's supposed to look like a marching band jacket without looking like you're wearing yours from your nerdy marching band days.

Pair it up with a simple v-neck tee and some distressed fitted denim, and the look is 110% sexy Rockstar. No fair that boys get everything good! I want my equality, dammit!

Non-Hippie environmentalists rejoice!

Don't get me wrong, Hippie girls... but y'all ain't known for cute fashion. Birks and dip-dyed batik skirts sold at outdoor festivals are fine if you're high... there's no way I would be caught in that sober!

But that doesn't mean that fashion has to be anti-environmentalism either. I openly admit that I love getting press releases from designers that are trying to do something really cool... and Malorie, representing Foxy Originals jewelry line, sent me an email about their new recycling program.

Basically, you can send them your pre-loved Foxy Originals jewelry and in return, you will receive 10% off your next purchase with them. They'll melt it down for their new collection lines and you can wear your new jewelry with Earth-lovin' pride. Win-win.

I checked out the site and they have some pretty cute pieces... everything is gold, silver or bronze plated and under $75... Crazy!

Time to slow my roll.

I spent some time in Nashville this week, while Ball And Chain's been studying for finals.

His birthday is tomorrow, so I was trying to find a gift for him... I ended up buying makeup, a high waisted pleated mini- tulip shaped skirt by Plastic Island, a very short satin mini-dress, some Kate Spade stationary, and some random stuff (though he did get his favorite Dunken Donuts coffee...) Oh my god, and I bought my plane tickets to D.C.... I have to slow my roll on the shopping until at least my birthday.

Justin and I decided that this year we are going to share a Rosetta Stone program and learn a business language, either Mandarin or Japanese. He's decided that he wants both a J.D. and an M.B.A. and would like to go into business... given our global economy, it would be stupid to not learn an Eastern language since, well... they basically own us. I work luxury retail and it is a very valuable skill to be able to communicate with tourists with money to spend, so whatever program he decides would be best I'll follow too!

We made a pact: when he lands a job (a real jobby job, within his desired salary range), we're going to reward ourselves with a trip to the country we'll be able to communicate in. I'm totally motivated since we'll be able to practice with each other and at home too.

Bitch, you blind.

Came back from shopping at the Green Hills Mall in Nashville...

So, I was super excited about Betsey Johnson's 40% off sale which ends today (in-store only) since we don't have a BJ in Saint Louis... and I'm HERE for five days.

I make a bee-line to the store. I see this dress, a mock-up of Alice's blue dress with a bib and white pockets (so, it's borderline), and I decided I might want to buy it. I grabbed the size 2 and then the sales girl suggested I bring the size 4 in the fitting room... I'm changing, and she also went ahead and put the size 6 in there.

Um, really?! She didn't really check up on me in the fitting room either... she just talked to her friend about this band she's putting together (eye roll). Hopefully, her hearing is better than her eyesight. Me? A size 6?! Bitch be BLIND.

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Maybe I'm weird...

I love polishing my silver jewelry myself.

It reminds me of when I would polish my silver flute in the sixth grade. Oh yes, yours truly was a band nerd...

My band uniforms were crimes against humanity... I present the evidence to the Fashion Court:

Exhibit A: A royal blue oversized golf polo with MLK Band embroidered on the front, tucked into black dress pants...

Exhibit B: For "evening wear", the girls were required to wear giant black polyester potato sacks for evening concerts with black stockings, black shoes and pearls. Each one of us looked like Sponge Bob Square Pants in drag and heading to a funeral.

Exhibit C: My marching band uniform that required white polyester pants that were pleated and creased down the leg. When I tried ironing them, they melted. Literally melted.

...Uh yeah, why do I like polishing silver again?!

P S A

From my friend Mica:

"Can you put out some kind of public service announcement regarding how lack of make-up as you near 30 is less 'fresh face' and more 'that' lady interviewed on the local news channel?

Thanks!"

For those of the same opinion, Sephora is doing a Friends & Family 15% off promotion with the discount code "BD2T9CB5".

French ELLE, kicks ass!

Ladies, head to Border's for the latest celebration in a woman's natural beauty:

French ELLE magazine is featuring an editorial this month of famous stars such as Monica Bellucci and Eva Herzigova without makeup.

Granted, they have the best lighting and photographers to catch and celebrate their moment... but it's so much better for our collective esteem than the cellulite- at - the- beach shots the tabloids are so fond of.

Is it just me?

Or does anyone else think this hat is really creepy looking? It seems like the eyes just follow you...

Recent Math...

+ Got a manicure AND a spa pedicure yesterday (gift certificate from Carol)
- My nails are already chipping

Totally bummer about my chipped nails. I guess I'll paint them a non-red color (since I don't own the color on my toes) before I go to Nashville this weekend.

My friend Sally is trying to convince me to go to the Gold Cup with her in D.C. If my travel plans coincide, I guess I will have to buy a really b-i-g hat. And cute shoes that can get trashed. I guess I will order a pair of those awesome $10 Newport News t-strap sandals... I used to have a couple of pairs in silver and gold, they really are great. They only cost $10 so if they get trashed, no biggie... and they look a lot nicer than $10.

I'm lovin' it.

Finally! I got my hair the rich, bright red hue I've been hoping for!

Actually, I got it done last week... picture was taken when I was stuck in traffic on my way back from the Tan Co.

Today I got a manicure and pedicure since I had a day off... of course, my manicure will chip off before my trip and when I left the salon wobbling in my flip flops, it was raining... but a girl's only got so much free time. I got a very bright red on my fingers and toes... lovin' that too!

That "Made in the USA" label...

I've always been conscious about what kind of products I buy. While my friends joke that I shop all the time, in reality I really don't shop more than the next girl. I just buy more expensive things because I am a nutcase for well produced, crafted items. Does it really matter to have supima cotton or sterling silver hardware or handsewn back pockets or sequins hand sewn by Oompa Loompas? YES.

The big reason I spend more on clothing than the next gal is I am very adamant about not buying goods produced in Chinese/Eastern Asia factories. In my opinion, you can't bitch about how America doesn't produce anything and that there's no manufacturing jobs here when you send all your hard-earned cash to China. They didn't rise as the world's economic power within the last 20 years by accident.

I am disheartened to realize some of my favorite brands now produce in the far east. Botkier used to be made in New York City, and now their bags are made in Indonesia. The shoes I bought are for sure made in Italy, so that's something. (As is my Marc Jacobs Collection bag, made in Italy.) Hayden-Hartnett is no longer made in Brooklyn--- now produced in China. Coach and Kate Spade are also made in China.

I did discover that Jenny Yuen is made in the USA still. Believe it or not, there's a selection of Louis Vuitton bags made in the USA too... Though most people desire that "Made in France" label. AG Adriano Goldschmied, American Apparel, LA Made, Park Vogel and Splendid are made in Los Angeles, CA. Since my style is pretty casual... these brands are pretty much all I wear!

I'm still pressed to find great shoes made in the USA. That's the problem though... lately, I've been making a point to only buy shoes made in Italy. Italians really make the best shoes and even American brands produce their shoes there for the higher quality. My Tory Burch, Botkier, Hollywould, Rocco P, and J. Crew boots were all produced in Italy. I'd love to add some Spanish made shoes to my collection, say some Pedro Garcia... Or eventually some French-made Christian Louboutins... Realistically, for a somewhat reasonable pair of shoes (*note under $500, retail) Brazilian shoes are supposed to be great quality. One brand that's made in Brazil that I like is Pour la Victoire. There's also what I live in, Havianas. Some people think it's pointless to spend $20 on rubber flip flops, but Havianas' patented rubber is one of the miracles of man. They are the most comfortable shoes ever... I work in them all summer!

I need to research American produced skin care and cosmetics, if anyone has any American made brands they like or produce please drop me an email.

Don't let me forget.

Hey friends, don't let me forget that tomorrow is my parents' anniversary.

Don't let me forget that tomorrow is April Fool's Day either, because someone will undoubtedly try to fuck with me. I will forget that it's April Fool's Day and I will make a jackass out of myself.

Don't let me forget that I need to buy the following things:

-paper towls
-toilet paper
-Diet Coke
-flavored water
-white shoe polish
-a cute black miniskirt
-AG S-Concept bootcut jeans

Thank you.

If I forget any of these things, I will blame each and every one of you.

Got a dress!

I got a great deal on a Vera Wang lavender label dress from ShopBop! $140!

Now until I wear it at Shelby's wedding, Justin is going to be following me around the house quoting Bride Wars, "You don't alter a Vera, you alter yourself to fit Vera!"

Sunday, March 22, 2009

I am one happy shoe whore.

Shoes by Botkier.
They will arrive in 4-8 business days. I am so excited!
